Can you tell us a little about yourself and your family?

I’m Kaileigh, mom of two boys Dawson age 5 with BBSOAS and Wren, 6 months. I love being a mom and spending time with family. We are from North Carolina and found the NR2F1 Foundation when our son was diagnosed with BBSOAS. We enjoy taking family adventures, going to the park and visiting our local ice cream shop.

What inspired you to organize this walk for the NR2F1 Foundation?

I felt organizing a fundraiser would be a great idea after reading a newsletter from the NR2F1 Foundation. As a family we wanted to reach out to support our son and other families with BBSOAS.

How did you come up with the idea for the walk?

We decided organizing a walk would be a fun community event to raise funds. We wanted to provide an environment that was uplifting and fun for the whole community.

What steps did you take to organize it?

After deciding to do the walk I contacted our local park. I submitted an application and waited back for approval. Within the week of submitting, parks and recreation approved the event. We contacted a local food truck as well to set up the day of the event. Once the location was approved we printed flyers, posted on social media and told family and friends. We also contacted local businesses asking if they would be interested in sponsoring the event. The sponsor’s logos were placed on our t-shirts and event banner. We provided games such as corn hole, bubbles, music, etc. I worked with the foundation to create the fundraiser page, that was so simple.

Did you face any challenges while planning? How did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge planning this event was stepping out of my comfort zone. This helped me to grow and set an example that even though things may seem hard don’t give up because it is so worth it in the end.

How did you get people involved—friends, family, or the local community?

We got people involved by posting on social media, hanging flyers, and word of mouth. It was inspiring to us everyone who was willing to lend a helpful hand, donate, and spread the word.

How did the event go? Were there any memorable moments?

The walk turned out to be a great day! The weather was beautiful, bubbles flowing through the air, music in the background and everyone having a great time. The most memorable moment for me was as we began walking my heart was filled with joy seeing everyone come together and our village supporting not only us but all BBSOAS families.

How did your family feel taking part?

We were filled with joy taking part in something bigger than ourselves.

What was the response from those who joined?

Everyone seemed to enjoy the walk. Looking around that day I saw smiles, laughter, and excitement for the 2026 walk.

How much did you raise, and what does it mean to you to support the NR2F1 foundation?

We ended up raising $3,500. The information, support and resources the foundation provides are so helpful navigating life as a BBSOAS family. We are so thankful for the NR2F1 Foundation.

What would you say to other families considering organizing a fundraiser?

Go for it! I know it can seem intimidating but take it step by step, get out of your comfort zone and enjoy the process.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to plan a similar event?

Set small goals and deadlines for yourself if you plan to organize an event. It keeps you organized leading up to the event.

Would you do it again? If so, would you change anything?

We plan to organize Dawson’s Army Walk for BBSOAS annually. We look forward to the coming years hoping to grow each year! I wouldn’t change anything about that day. It was the best!

A huge thanks to Kaileigh and all her supporters for raising awareness and donations for the NR2F1 Foundation.
